So, how was your proposal? feeling better? As mentioned, from time to time I will be using this blogsite to stimulate your interest in reading. This activity will test your mental ability to analyze and apply your learning out of reading.
Below is a statement from a professional social researcher describing the ethical issues in conducting research. Please read carefully and answer the questions individually. Meaning, I expect 49 answers.
"There are a number of key phrases that describe the system of ethical protections that the contemporary social and medical research establishment have created to try to protect better the rights of their research participants. The principle of voluntary participation requires that people not be coerced into participating in research. This is especially relevant where researchers had previously relied on 'captive audiences' for their subjects -- prisons, universities, and places like that. Closely related to the notion of voluntary participation is the requirement of informed consent. Essentially, this means that prospective research participants must be fully informed about the procedures and risks involved in research and must give their consent to participate. Ethical standards also require that researchers not put participants in a situation where they might be at risk of harm as a result of their participation. Harm can be defined as both physical and psychological. There are two standards that are applied in order to help protect the privacy of research participants. Almost all research guarantees the participants confidentiality -- they are assured that identifying information will not be made available to anyone who is not directly involved in the study. The stricter standard is the principle of anonymity which essentially means that the participant will remain anonymous throughout the study -- even to the researchers themselves. Clearly, the anonymity standard is a stronger guarantee of privacy, but it is sometimes difficult to accomplish, especially in situations where participants have to be measured at multiple time points (e.g., a pre-post study). Increasingly, researchers have had to deal with the ethical issue of a person's right to service. Good research practice often requires the use of a no-treatment control group -- a group of participants who do not get the treatment or program that is being studied. But when that treatment or program may have beneficial effects, persons assigned to the no-treatment control may feel their rights to equal access to services are being curtailed".

1.in conducting an interview, you must be alert and be obedient. You have to explain to the person that you have interviewed the purpose of the interview.Just be conscious of the things that are going to be ask.Show good manners.
2.If the identified respondents refused to be interviewed, then you have to convince him|her nicely and explain your aim as a researcher.Tell him|her that your intension is good. And if ever he would still refuse then just respect.

ANSWERS:
1. First, I will find the 5 respondents that have been required to us by the Department of Trade, these are respondents who know things about the said problem with regards to the Department of Trade and second I will assure these respondents of security with their answers and take it confidentially as well and I will be putting their answers with privacy also. I will be interviewing or asking theses respondents in a secret way that nobody will know or some place where we can discuss private things.
2. In my own opinion with things like these, in today’s time for sure the respondents wont dare to answer the questions ask by the said department or they won’t also put their answers or the informations being asked to them in a data base because these informations are surely confidential and it is private to those respondents. I will do something that will convince them to answer the questions regarding the research I am having which is related to Department of Trade and I will also tell them that I am student of this institution and I am capable of keeping things secretly with the help of the values and respect I learn from the school, I will assure them and give them proof of the things that I have been saying. I will assure them of privacy, confidentiality and security with the answers they have said upon my interview with them.

This case mainly talks about the ethical issues of the research participants. First, I will gather information from the faculty members and professors in the school of St. Michael’s College regarding this case matter with privacy. Choosing 5 respondents is not easy. As to comply on the contract signed, I will also conduct an open-ended and close-ended type of questionnaires to manipulate the possible data to be strongly presented from the inputs and outputs to the Department of Trade.
2. Should the "accordingly identified respondents" refuse to be interviewed, what is/are your strategies?
I must find a reasonable and conservative ways to be approved by the respondents to be interviewed.
However, I must not lose hope or give up for this matter. Patience is a virtue, and knowledge is practiced through experiences and application. Anyhow, I must be presentable, knowledgeable and well equipped in all circumstances.

Having an interviewed people is not easy to please them. for me to have a five respondents, I will choose the right five interviewee that are related to their own business that required by the department of trade and industry and at the same time people who are willing to answer some survey questions as conducted. As the result of the ethical issues, I will keep privacy on it for a security purpose. But before to do anything else, giving a respect with a simple self introduction with them is important to be acknowledge.
If the accordingly identified respondents refuse to be interviewed, I will be telling the some reasons on why we conduct interviews and explain the effect on the surveys on what we have done. With is, the identified respondents will enlighten their minds and might give us enough time to interview.

In this case, it really needs a careful attention and patience. Finding the said identified respondents is not trouble-free as well as asking a little of their precious time. The finest thing that I will execute is know first the purpose of the research in order for me to control and handle the possible questions that the respondents might inquire. Question:
1. The social researcher defines the ethical issues in research, How will you handle the case?
If I were to handle this case, I would definitely inform the respondents first by handling them a letter or a verbal conversation requesting for their consent. I would make sure that our respondents had made their approval first for the said interview before going into their respective establishments or offices. And if they would disapprove our request, we would not impose them to make their approval. Every respondent has their own right to make the decision whether to support our study or not.
2. Should the "accordingly identified respondents" refuse to be interviewed, what is/are your strategies?
The identified respondents have the right to refuse on the said interview because we all know that we are not the only people in this world who have responsibilities in life. If possible, I would ask them to spare some time for the said interview and so that they won’t feel being harsh or inconsiderate I would probably let them decide on to what time they would feel free to be interview because we all know that these people being interviewed has a lot of things and work to do. By pleading them for the said interview, it would be accurate enough if I would explain to them what would be the advantages and how would the interview be beneficial to our study. By presenting ourselves with a decent protocol and etiquette, I’m sure that they won’t be hesitant enough to grant our request.

1. The social researcher defines the ethical issues in research, how will you handle the case?
- In having a research, first you should conduct an interview of your respondents. in order to have your interview possible, identify the interviewees capability to answer such questions. Then, all your data should be true and reliable. This data that I gathered from them is strictly confidential, so that they will have an assurance of the information that they've gave that it will be safe and not to use in bad motifs.
2. Should the "accordingly identified respondents" refuse to be interviewed, what is/are your strategies?
- In having such interview, you should be patient and not easily discouraged. If given a situation like this, First, I will greet them politely and use any kind of charming actions. In this way, it could have a big possibility that i could get their attentions. Second, I will slowly introduce to them what is my motive to them. Discussing to them that i will be having an interview on them and I'll need their full cooperation. Third, I will discuss or start to interview them. After my interview, I will thank them for being cooperative in such a small time that I get on them. And assure them that the info that they've gave to me is strongly confidential and in good use.
1.The code of ethic in research of the researcher is a primary responsibility of the respondents in conducting any research work, it must be treated in accordance with the governing values of confidentiality and objectivity.
2The respondents to be interviewed should be treated in accordance with the ethics and etiquettes of research. He should be guided according to his convenience and relevancy of the issues to be asked. It must be treated by respect and courtesy. A researcher must be govern with guided and prepared questions to be asked to the respondents and the law of presenting questions must be briefed and cleared reasons. And he shouldn't argue the respondent in raising questions and let the respondents expressed his opinion freely.

Project Title:
Career Preference of BS Hotel and Restaurant Management Students of Saint Michael’s College
Abstract
Career; as stated in the Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary 10th edition; is a course, a passage or a field of pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement esp. in publicatio0n, professional, or business life; a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling. Preference on the other hand is the power or opportunity of choosing; an act or fact or principle of giving advantages to some over others, and priority and right to demand and receive satisfaction of an obligation. Hotel and Restaurant Management is a Bachelor of Science course offered in college that provides knowledge on proper food handling, public relations, culinary expertise, and management specializing in hotel and restaurant.
There are lots of jobs for a BS HRM graduate. Here and abroad. These are the few of the possible career to choose from, being a hotel or establishment receptionist, a cook or chef perhaps in maritime, hotel and restaurants, food enterprise proprietor or hotel and restaurant manager. These are just few of the possible career to pursue after graduation. This study will help determine what the possible career of BS HRM students years or right after graduation.
III. Project Description
PURPOSE
According to news and surveys, there are a high percentage of graduates that chose to work not on their field of expertise but with what are available job or work there is because of lack of job openings and choices. During the past years a number of valuable studies have been conducted to assess the performance of students on their chosen career; through this study we might be able to point out or site variables that could help the BS HRM students choose what career to pursue after graduation. It is the most important role of this study, that is to assess what are the possible career preference of students taking up BS Hotel and Restaurant Management course and how they would be able to achieve it or accomplish it with superior performance through personal conduct, time management, job demands, economic standard and/or any other factor that could affect in the success of the chosen field or career which linked or relates to their undergrad course which is the BS Hotel and Restaurant Management course and so to also point out the different deficiencies along way if there is one.
SIGNIFICANCE
This study not only includes the effects of reliability and consistency of social structure; (it is an unproven but debated statement that only those that belong to higher class family in our society will likely to succeed in their career with this course, realizing and considering the fact that it would take time to put up a linked/related enterprise with scarce resources and limited financial support) considering the economic status of our country. This study will also assess the role of the school, the professors and mentors, family, peers, environment and personal conduct in the decision-making or how influential these factors can be.
HISTORY
The Bachelor of Arts Major in Hotel and Restaurant Management course is not a well-known course before. Some mistakenly think that HRM courses only tackle about cooking and food serving in hotels and restaurant only; what they do not know is that HRM courses deal with effective & comprehensive training in the hospitality arena and improves human relations abilities. In HRM you will also develop a keen understanding of the skills necessary to run a successful and competitive food service enterprise, how to manage customers and become effective hosts. Years had passed and now the demand of HRM expertise is at large not only here in the Philippines but also abroad. We can not deny the fact that food is one of our basic needs, in every corner of cities or even barrios we can find restaurants and fast-food chains. So it is elicited to say that HRM courses are not as essential as medical courses like Nursing.
The strength of the Hotel and Restaurant Management program lies in combining management with culinary expertise. It will develop your understanding on both front room and front office procedures, enhanced by a working knowledge of the kitchen preparation process and other essential “behind-the-scenes” operations. The program highlights topic on elements of food and plate presentation, buffet organization methods, the history and study of specific cuisines as well as preferred serving protocols. We should not forget that we humans liked the idea of eating foods that are creatively presented, we feast with our eyes. We judge the food by its appearance at first then by taste. This Bachelor’s degree program is the perfect choice for working professionals who want to indulge in business careers like owning a restaurant or even a hotel.
1. I should handle the case seriously and with care. In handling one, I should not only be thinking of my own self by attaining the objectives of the said study but rather consider the other persons involve.
Explaining the reasons to the respondents why I have to ask for their support and help and giving them assurances that it will be handled with confidentiality making sure the they will not be put at risks in any ways. But before that I have to talk to them, of what my purpose is . In this manner, they will be aware of what they are undergoing or doing. In this way, it is also fair enough that they will be enlighten of the matter.
2. If in any case my respondents will not cooperate or they will refuse to be interviewed, I will try to convince and persuade them in a manner that will not offend them. I will again, explain to them the purpose of the research and that their cooperation is of great help for the success of the research. I will deal with them accordingly and give them the respect that they need. It is understandable that people sometimes are having second thoughts in cooperating because they are afraid that they might be put into a situation wherein they will be endanger, but assuring them of their security is my number one priority. Another strategy that I can think of is, we can make an arrangement where they will be feel comfortable and at ease while we do the interview. I will ask them of what they want and tell them what I want. In this way, we will compromise so that we will have a successful outcome.

1. The social researcher defines the ethical issues in research, how will you handle the case?
In handling ethical issues, I will provide 5 respondents as DOT required and interview them with privacy. I will assure them the confidentiality of their answers. As to provide the participant’s right of keeping them into safe.
2. Should the "accordingly identified respondents" refuse to be interviewed, what is/are your strategies?
If the respondents refuse to be interviewed, I will explain to them the future trend of the said research, for them to know the significance and objectives of the research.
Answer:
1.Maybe, I will handle the case confidentially, to be able to have safe and clear gathered information. Researching is not a simple task where you can always get the right information you need. You must know if you can do possible things that will benefit to your study. If you are assigned to get very confidential information related to something and it really challenges you a lot because of that it is a big and private company or what. You need to be patient and responsible enough to the persons involve in your study and try to convince and assure them that the info that they have to share to you will remain confidential.
2. As what I have said, you need to assure to the respondents that they maybe anonymous or confidential. Alway
assure or convince them that they are always being safe. Be responsible to the task assigned to you for to get the right information you need to your study.

Department of Trade and Industry commissioned ST. Michael's College to gather (or enumerate) information from accordingly identified respondents, and store this information in a database. As compliance to the contract signed, you are required to interview at least 5 respondents.
Question:
1. The social researcher defines the ethical issues in research, how will you handle the case?
Well, basically it primarily involves systematizing, defending and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior. This may involve articulating the good habits that we should acquire, the duties that we should follow, or the consequences of our behavior on others. It is the manner of how we have confidentiality in our work, and have the articulate privacy. In this way researcher can have the mere information with some privacy and confidentiality with his/her research. And lastly, researcher must be active, open minded, very observant that knows what happen to his/her environment, willing to accept corrections and failures given by the other people.
2. Should the "accordingly identified respondents" refuse to be interviewed, what is/are your strategies?
The following strategies to be done are the following: 1.) Identify and clearly stated your objective and purpose to your respondents. 2.) Must be keen to all information you have discussed and talk to the respondents in a good manner with patience for those respondents that have a hard time to understand. 3.) be accurate with all your data you have provided to them and always maintain a good “aura” and smile. 4) And lastly, the most effective strategy is to get their trust by doing an effective talk and feeling them comfortable.
1. as a social researcher, first and foremost, you should have fully understand the whole study, you have to be attentive and be able to convey the questions in appropriate manner. You have to adjust your schedule in their own convenience.
2. I guess the respondents will not refuse to answer if the researcher can convey and explain the objectives well, the purpose and significance of the research, and most especially if they don't have anything to hide. If the respondent insist to refuse to answer... as a researcher you have to be flexible and be able to convinced the respondents... adjust the time and be able to control your temper.

1. The social researcher defines the ethical issues in research, how will you handle the case?
Well apparently, the task is extremely thorny knowing the fact that there are a lot of safety measures to consider. So, I personally want to put forth my efforts in compelling my respondents and I will assure them whole heartedly that their answers will be keep confidentially. On the other hand, I will discuss to them also the background of the research so as not to complicate the situation. I strongly believe that through my brief justification it would absolutely enlighten their minds and cooperate without any hesitation. I mean, who knows they might like my research and support me from the study.
2. Should the "accordingly identified respondents" refuse to be interviewed, what is/are your strategies?
It is very inevitable that there are people who don’t really participate dynamically on this matter. Probably, I won’t eventually force them if they don’t like. Instead, I will let them realize the importance and opportunity how providential they are to be chosen as one of the respondents, they will be given a chance to voice out, the freedom to choose for what one believes. Of course, I will guarantee them that they are chosen for a reason.

LIEZEL S. DENILA
1. The social researcher defines the ethical issues in research, how will you handle the case?
As a researcher handling ethical issues, I will provide the 5 respondents related to their business and willing to answer the survey that I will conduct as Department of Trade and Industry required and interview them personally with privacy and I will assure it that I will make our conversation confidential. And also as a researcher we must have a long patience and ready to face those circumstances that we can encounter in convincing and interviewing our respondents. And we must also respect the right of our respondents if she/he does not want to interview.
2. Should the "accordingly identified respondents" refuse to be interviewed, what is/are your strategies?
If ever the identified respondents refuse to be interviewed, I guess I will respect his/her decision. Because each of us we need a privacy. But I will not lose hope, I will explain to her/him clearly what are the significance of this interview.

Project Title:
Career Preference of BS Hotel and Restaurant Management Students of Saint Michael’s College
Abstract
“The type of business you choose for your first job puts you into a definite career slot.” says Rocco M. Angelo in his book Hospitality Today. There are lots of jobs for a BS HRM graduate to choose from. Here and abroad. These are the few of the possible career to choose from, being a hotel or establishment receptionist, a cook or chef perhaps in maritime, hotel and restaurants, food enterprise proprietor or hotel and restaurant manager, Food and Beverage managers, Human resources managers, floor managers, catering managers, resident managers and marketing and sales manager. These are just few of the possible career to pursue after graduation. This study will help determine what the possible career preferences of BS HRM students’ right are after or years after graduation.
This study not only includes the effects and issues of reliability and consistency of social structure; (it is an unproven but debated statement that only those that belong to higher class family in our society will likely to succeed in their career with this course, realizing and considering the fact that it would take time to put up a linked or related enterprise with scarce resources and limited financial support), considering the economic status of our country, and the “blind issue” concerning that HRM graduates levels with a plain housekeeper or a high morale term for a house or hotel keeper.
It is the most important role or significance of this study, which is to assess what are the possible career preference of students taking up BS Hotel and Restaurant Management course. This study will also assess the role of the school, the professors and mentors, family, environment and personal conduct. While skills and experience are usually transferable within a particular industry segment, such as resort and hotel or restaurants, generally you can’t jump from one kind of industry or career to another very easily. This study will help the students and graduates of HRM courses on choosing their career in accordance with their field of expertise.
The researchers of this study will conduct an interview on some of the pioneering students of SMC BS Hotel and Restaurant Management course and what are their career now as well as the preferred career of the students of HRM who were yet to graduate.
III. Project Description
PURPOSE
According to news and surveys, there are a high percentage of graduates that chose to work not on their field of expertise but with what are available job or work there is because of lack of job openings and choices. The proposed study will help HRM students choose what career to pursue after graduation. The role of the school, the professors and mentors, family, peers, environment and personal decisions will be explored as factors affecting the preference of the students in choosing a career. Moreover, this proposed study is to assess the possible career as measured by the students’ preference and to match these preferences to the required knowledge and skills.
SIGNIFICANCE
This proposed study will not only allow students to acquaint with their possible career and help in maintaining the effectiveness of the goal of the program or the course offered by the school this will also be a tool for the administrators and faculties of SMC to assess the fruits of their labors which will reflect on the success of their graduates and students in their preferred career after four years of extensive formal training on the said course at SMC.
HISTORY
The Bachelor of Arts Major in Hotel and Restaurant Management course in Saint Michael’s College was opened year 2003, this course was one of the newly offered courses of the school that school year; the other two were BS Nursing and BS Criminology. In line with these new courses, more facilities were provided such as separate laboratories for speech and hotel practicum, and the HRM students were being provided with a luxurious mini-hotel on a separate building as a venue for hands-on training. With a college vision of sincerely committing ourselves to be professionally competent, dynamic and effective in order to become globally competitive, value oriented and are able to face challenges of life. BS HRM as stated in the student handbook (2005 edition) of SMC is a comprehensive four-year professional course in Hotel and Restaurant Management that aims to equipped men and women with sound and functional knowledge and principles in the operation and management of hotels, resorts, and restaurants. HRM students are prepared for dynamic leadership in the economic community through knowledge and skills from formal instruction, practicum through local and international linkages, and Christian values and discipline.
Here are some of the possible careers of an HRM graduate:
1.) Catering Manager is the one who promotes and sells the hotel or restaurant banquet’s facilities and uses his or her expertise to plan, organize the banquets that range from fine dining to picnic buffets. Expertise and knowledge in food costs, preparation techniques, and pricing is essential. Good catering managers are also aware of social customs and etiquette, creativity and imagination are useful qualities as well. 2.) Chief Engineers are responsible for the hotel’s physical operation and maintenance. This includes the electrical, heating, air-conditioning, refrigeration and plumbing systems. 3.) Food and Beverage Managers directs the production of and service of food an beverages. They are responsible for training the dining room and kitchen staffs and ensuring quality control. They work with their head chefs to plan menus, and with at large properties the food and beverage manger has sole responsibility for these tasks. Menu pricing and cost control are also their duty. Because food and beverage is service is offered from 15 to 24 hours a day, managers are opt to be prepared in working long shifts and endure periods of pressure dealing with unexpectedly large numbers of diners, getting a banquet served and other assigned duties. 4.) Chef is the main man in the kitchen; his job requires deep and keen interest in food and wine and an up-to-date knowledge in food trends and different cuisines. 5.) Controller is the in charge of the accounting department, which is why in BS HRM; accounting is one of the subjects. The controller is in charge of its functions such as the management of credit, payroll, guest accounts, and all cashiering activities. It is also his responsibility to prepare the budgets and daily, weekly, and monthly reports showing revenues, expenses, and other statistics that managers may require. They are detail-oriented individuals and have a favorable orientation on analytical approach to business problems. 6.) Human Resources Manager is in charge of the employees relations within the hotel. This includes counseling employees, developing and administering programs to maintain and improve employee morale, monitoring the work environment and so on. They are also responsible in recruiting and training the majority of the hotel’s employees. Most important part of their job is to oversee compliance with equal employment opportunity and affirmative action laws and policies. 7.) Marketing and Sales Managers are the ones who develop and implement a marketing plan and budget. This plan lays out the ways in which the hotel intends to attract business; they are also in charge of the corporate accounts. 8.) Resident Managers are often the executives in charge of the room divisions of a hotel. Their areas of responsibility include the front office, reservations and housekeeping. 9.) 1. To conduct an interview is not an easy task. thou it's just a set of questions but you should think that you'll be dealing people with different personalities. It's very important that you should be prepare, approach professionally, and act mature
2. if the said correspondents refused, first and foremost the researcher must be ready in any situations. As a researcher, you must be flexible in dealing people
's special cases. explain it well and learn to extend your patience and understanding. Whatever the respondents approach, the researcher must respect whatever the decisions are.
Question:
1. The social researcher defines the ethical issues in research, How will you handle the case?
First I should conduct my interview with the participants where they are comfortable with and then I should see to it that I should fully inform the research participants about the procedures and risks involved in research and that their confidentiality is ensured and I must ask for their consent to participate with the research.
2. Should the "accordingly identified respondents" refuse to be interviewed, what is/are your strategies?
In this case I should convince the respondents to participate with the research, explain to them the purpose of the research and that there are standards applied to help protect the privacy of the research participants that their confidentiality is guaranteed.
I. Research Problem
“A Comparative Study of Hotel and Restaurant Management Foreign and Domestic On-the-Job Training“
II. Abstract
Venturing wider horizons for better opportunity is important to students exposing them to different workplaces; culture, environment, etc. will increase the chance of getting employed after college. On-the-job training is an academic program that deals with the exposure of the future professionals in the field of their career and to develop a sense of responsibility and professionalism. Hence, the very integral part of the study is to determine the advantages and disadvantages of foreign and domestic on-the-job training. It can contribute ideas and insights; a career and prepare the students physically, emotionally and intellectually in a world of vocation in line with each one’s expertise and interest. On-the-job training would either make or break a student’s image depending on his performance during work; time management, working habits and attitude, professional relationship taken are some of the determinants. Survey research is one of the most important areas of measurement in applied social research; it shall be a form of short paper-and-pencil feedback form to an intensive one-on-one interview. Questionnaire shall be distributed among the students who were already exposed to such on-the-job training. Personal interviews can be also done to explicate more the data gathering. Focus group discussion shall be then utilized to magnify the desired results and to rectify any discrepancies.
III. Project Description
A. Purpose
- This study aims to determine the advantages and disadvantages between foreign and domestic on-the-job training based on the trainee's performance, time management, working habits and attitude and professional relationship.
B. Significance
- The students can be able to determine the pros and cons of both on-the-job training experiences.
- The supporting administrators and mentors of the apprentices could point out potential effective workers and assign them in a highly-regarded company to train in.
- The student can develop a better character; a sense of responsibility and independence and positive attitude in dealing towards work.
C. History
The pioneering batch of the Hotel and Restaurant Management just completed their degree last school year 2006-2007. Out the 28 pioneering students, three of them took credits of their on-the-job training abroad particularly in Singapore, while the remaining group apprenticed in some prominent hotels in the metropolitan city of Manila. To name the hotels and other hospitality industry establishments are Renaissance Hotel, Manila Peninsula Hotel, Manila Diamond Hotel, Shang-ri La Hotel, PAL Catering Services and Mandarin Hotel, to name a few. Recently, eighteen regular Hotel and Restaurant Management students are granted a visa for their departure in Virginia, USA for on-the-job training purposes. They are expected to depart for USA on March 5, 2008 and be back before June 25, 2008. Business practices between foreign and domestic hospitality industry can be also guided upon the nature of work and how to rectify the inconsistencies seen between domestic and foreign working environment. The apprentices must bear in mind that it is truly important to adapt and adjust with the standards and norms of the corporate world like they’ve never been before. Sensibly, the first batch who were sent to the said exposure did a good job and received brilliant reviews from their host company. After their graduation, a number of them were absorbed to become a part of the educational force of St. Michael's College and some are working in hotels both local and abroad. Through this, the performance during work including the working habits and attitude should be religiously observed. Time management is vital in the workplace in order to avoid work overload and stress which is a common problem among professional constituents, that is why this must be straightened up. Ethical behavior is basically significant in terms of the professional relationship and building a good working image among one's co-workers. Thus, the variables stated shall be measured through qualitative research that aims in gaining a deep understanding in this study and after the data gathering, focus group discussion shall follow within to determine the expected results and set-up the plan of work.
D. Plan of Work
The researchers have already planned to continue sincerely the technicalities of the research study after the researchers’ on-the-job training in Virginia, USA. The said training will take about four months from the month of March until June. By July 1, 2008, the researchers shall persist finishing the study on a designated time and venue. Since the study focuses on the experience of foreign and domestic on-the-job training, from the invested practice the researchers could impart the aspired knowledge and skills to broaden up the ideas and concerns regarding the topic. The researchers shall be able to contribute inputs and insights to differentiate the two parties and to define the assumed variables. The proposed project will take place in the residence of the three researchers according to our schedule and vacant time particularly in Pala-o and Tambo Gerona Iligan City; likewise, the researchers can also proceed to the nearest intenet café and study houses such as Scelto Internet Café and Bea’s Café and Study.
First and foremost, the researchers are going to gather information through interview survey. The group is going to formally approach the constituents of the on-the-job training program of St. Michael’s College specifically the Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management students including the graduates. It shall be a proper interview and shall be video graphed to acquire concrete evidence for possible interrogations. It is also intended that the researchers are going to come up with a series of questions regarding the respondent’s experience during his or her on-the-job training period.
After the stipulated procedure, the researchers shall undergo a consultation with the instructor and a selected professional mentor. The initial results shall serve as one of our basis to determine the comparison of domestic and foreign on-the-job training through a focus group discussion. From the private forum, the researchers are expecting some discrepancies about the initial results and shall confirm it to the paper adviser.
The researchers also need to research on the hospitality culture between the Philippines, USA and Singapore, since these are the places that the HRM students are sent for their OJT. With the shared experiences from the respondents, the researchers are going to connect the data gathered towards the presumed variables about the TRAINEE such as time management, work habits, work attitude and the professional relationships endowed by the TRAINEE.
Operational Terms:
1. On-the-Job Training- refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relates to specific useful skills. It forms the core of apprenticeships and provides the backbone of content at technical colleges and polytechnics. In addition to the basic training required for a trade, occupation or profession, it is recognized today that there is need to continue training beyond initial qualifications to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life. In the context of many professions and occupations this may be referred to as professional development.
2. Time Management- Time management can refer to all of the practices that individuals follow to make better use of their time, but such a definition could range over such diverse areas as the selection and use of personal electronic devices, time and motion study, self-awareness, and indeed a great deal of self-help. As narrowly defined, it refers to principles and systems that individuals use to make conscious decisions about the activities that occupy their time.
3. Work Attitude- is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual's like or dislike for an item. Attitudes are positive, negative or neutral views of an "attitude object": i.e. a person, behavior or event. People can also be "ambivalent" towards a target, meaning that they simultaneously possess a positive and a negative bias towards the attitude in question.
4. Work Habit- are automatic routines of behavior that are repeated regularly, without thinking. They are learned, not instinctive, human behaviors that occur automatically, without the explicit contemporaneous intention of the person. The person may not be paying attention to or be conscious or aware of the behavior. When the behavior is brought to the person's attention, they may be able to control it.
5. Professional Relationship- involves social associations, connections, or affiliations between two or more people. Such persons may interact overtly, covertly, face-to-face; or may remain effectively unknown to each other (as in a virtual community whose members maintain anonymity and do not socialize outside of a chat-room).
6. Hospitality Industry- is a 3.5 trillion dollar service sector within the global economy. It is an umbrella term for a broad variety of service industries including, but not limited to, hotels, food service, casinos, and tourism. The hospitality industry is very diverse and global. The industry is cyclical; dictated by the fluctuations that occur with an economy every year.
7. Domestic- refers to the local employment or within the Philippines
8. Foreign- refers to the international employment outside the dominion of one's country
E. Expected Results
After due process has been completed, the researchers are anticipating desirable results and justified any type of errors along the study. The researchers are also open to new methods to be used in continuing such research study and the paper itself would serve as a basis for further learning; in order to determine the significance of the study towards the academe in terms of the performance of the future OJT participants whether domestic or foreign. In this way, the researchers will be assured and certain in presenting the study and realize a possibility of expanding the core of the topic in the mere future.
