I.Project Title

The Performance of SMC HRM Students of Eating Junk Foods….Since you have no accurate data re number of students eating junk foods, I suggest you compare the performance of the non-eater and eater.

II. Abstract

Studies have shown that students are heavily influenced by food advertising and promotions. In many cases, those unhealthy foods have been promoted wisely that it appears to be good for heath and wellness despite the facts that it affects performance, study habit, relationship with the family, health and even death. Junk food is a term describing foods that are classified as unhealthy and/or having poor nutritional value. This study proposed to determine the number of students who are fun in eating junk foods including their daily consumption. It aims to identify the relationship of junk foods to the performance of the students as indicated by their grade point average, study habit, relationship with the family, and their health. Although, the proposed study is not relatively new, the researchers proposed to conduct and validate the theory at the local setting. The study will help students minimize, refrain, or quit from eating junk food.

II.Project Description

Purpose

This will be a comparative study showing the relationship of junk foods to grade point average, study habit, relationship with the family, and health of the St. Michael’s College Students. Furthermore, the proposed study is interested in knowing the factors influencing the junk food eaters to eat such foods.

It is very essential for a person to know and understand the effect of all packed and preserved foods and the benefit of all natural foods like fruits and vegetables. Although the upbringing of the parents to their children, lifestyle, influenced of peers, friends, televisions, and mags are acceptable factors in the performance of a student in school, the study is limited to determine the possible link of junk foods to the mention variables.

Significance

As observed, college students of St. Michael’s College tends to become a junk food addict.
Working in this particular field, although the topic is related to healthcare, eating lifestyle has became an important areas in the Tourism and Hospitality industries. It is the researchers aim to provide healthy lifestyle for the researchers’ target customers.

History

The research reviews the effect of eating junk foods. Some researchers explained that junk food is being consumed by students in record quantities.

“Junk Food” is food which traditionally has no nutritional value. It deprives the body necessary nutrients and it’s over consumption over time leads to obesity, medical problem, and behavioral problems. Some examples are: ”Salted snack foods, candy, gums, most sweet desserts, fried fast food and carbonated beverages…” (Ask Dietitian, ____).

According to Crister (2003), Junk food consumption is associated with various physical ailments including obesity, Type II diabetes, heart attacks and decreased life expectancy. Because of junk food, “Our children’s life expectancy could be lower than our own (Lempert,2005)”.

Junk food is also a major cause in the 23 percent of American who are overweight. (Assuras, 2001) Fast food and the increasingly available category of junk food is strongly correlated to the “300 percent increase in the rate of U.S. children who are either overweight or obese (Lempert, 2005).”

Furthermore, according to Masser (2000) is also what can cause the crash afterwards which manifests in drowsiness and lack of concentration. Even caffeine from soda sold in school vending machines causes such behavior swings.

• Ok... I suggest you need to compare the non-eater and the eater.
• Please proceed to the plan of work and expected results and submit it to judesalon@yahoo.com. Should you need a template for your Gantt Chart, please see me in my office.

I. Research Problem

“A Comparative Study of Hotel and Restaurant Management Foreign and Domestic On-the-Job Training“

II. Abstract

Venturing wider horizons for better opportunity is important to students exposing them to different workplaces; culture, environment, etc. will increase the chance of getting employed after college. On-the-job training is an academic program that deals with the exposure of the future professionals in the field of their career and to develop a sense of responsibility and professionalism. Hence, the very integral part of the study is to determine the advantages and disadvantages of foreign and domestic on-the-job training. It can contribute ideas and insights; a career and prepare the students physically, emotionally and intellectually in a world of vocation in line with each one’s expertise and interest. On-the-job training would either make or break a student’s image depending on his performance during work; time management, working habits and attitude, professional relationship taken are some of the determinants. Survey research is one of the most important areas of measurement in applied social research; it shall be a form of short paper-and-pencil feedback form to an intensive one-on-one interview. Questionnaire shall be distributed among the students who were already exposed to such on-the-job training. Personal interviews can be also done to explicate more the data gathering. Focus group discussion shall be then utilized to magnify the desired results and to rectify any discrepancies.

III. Project Description

A. Purpose

- This study aims to determine the advantages and disadvantages between foreign and domestic on-the-job training based on the trainee's performance, time management, working habits and attitude and professional relationship.

B. Significance

- The students can be able to determine the pros and cons of both on-the-job training experiences.
- The supporting administrators and mentors of the apprentices could point out potential effective workers and assign them in a highly-regarded company to train in.
- The student can develop a better character; a sense of responsibility and independence and positive attitude in dealing towards work.

C. History

The pioneering batch of the Hotel and Restaurant Management just completed their degree last school year 2006-2007. Out the 28 pioneering students, three of them took credits of their on-the-job training abroad particularly in Singapore, while the remaining group apprenticed in some prominent hotels in the metropolitan city of Manila. To name the hotels and other hospitality industry establishments are Renaissance Hotel, Manila Peninsula Hotel, Manila Diamond Hotel, Shang-ri La Hotel, PAL Catering Services and Mandarin Hotel, to name a few. Recently, eighteen regular Hotel and Restaurant Management students are granted a visa for their departure in Virginia, USA for on-the-job training purposes. They are expected to depart for USA on March 5, 2008 and be back before June 25, 2008. Business practices between foreign and domestic hospitality industry can be also guided upon the nature of work and how to rectify the inconsistencies seen between domestic and foreign working environment. The apprentices must bear in mind that it is truly important to adapt and adjust with the standards and norms of the corporate world like they’ve never been before. Sensibly, the first batch who were sent to the said exposure did a good job and received brilliant reviews from their host company. After their graduation, a number of them were absorbed to become a part of the educational force of St. Michael's College and some are working in hotels both local and abroad. Through this, the performance during work including the working habits and attitude should be religiously observed. Time management is vital in the workplace in order to avoid work overload and stress which is a common problem among professional constituents, that is why this must be straightened up. Ethical behavior is basically significant in terms of the professional relationship and building a good working image among one's co-workers. Thus, the variables stated shall be measured through qualitative research that aims in gaining a deep understanding in this study and after the data gathering, focus group discussion shall follow within to determine the expected results and set-up the plan of work.

Operational Terms:

1. On-the-Job Training- refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and competencies as a result of the teaching of vocational or practical skills and knowledge that relates to specific useful skills. It forms the core of apprenticeships and provides the backbone of content at technical colleges and polytechnics. In addition to the basic training required for a trade, occupation or profession, it is recognized today that there is need to continue training beyond initial qualifications to maintain, upgrade and update skills throughout working life. In the context of many professions and occupations this may be referred to as professional development.
2. Time Management- Time management can refer to all of the practices that individuals follow to make better use of their time, but such a definition could range over such diverse areas as the selection and use of personal electronic devices, time and motion study, self-awareness, and indeed a great deal of self-help. As narrowly defined, it refers to principles and systems that individuals use to make conscious decisions about the activities that occupy their time.
3. Work Attitude- is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual's like or dislike for an item. Attitudes are positive, negative or neutral views of an "attitude object": i.e. a person, behavior or event. People can also be "ambivalent" towards a target, meaning that they simultaneously possess a positive and a negative bias towards the attitude in question.
4. Work Habit- are automatic routines of behavior that are repeated regularly, without thinking. They are learned, not instinctive, human behaviors that occur automatically, without the explicit contemporaneous intention of the person. The person may not be paying attention to or be conscious or aware of the behavior. When the behavior is brought to the person's attention, they may be able to control it.
5. Professional Relationship- involves social associations, connections, or affiliations between two or more people. Such persons may interact overtly, covertly, face-to-face; or may remain effectively unknown to each other (as in a virtual community whose members maintain anonymity and do not socialize outside of a chat-room).
6. Hospitality Industry- is a 3.5 trillion dollar service sector within the global economy. It is an umbrella term for a broad variety of service industries including, but not limited to, hotels, food service, casinos, and tourism. The hospitality industry is very diverse and global. The industry is cyclical; dictated by the fluctuations that occur with an economy every year.
7. Domestic- refers to the local employment or within the Philippines
8. Foreign- refers to the international employment outside the dominion of one's country

D. Plan of Work

The researchers have already planned to continue sincerely the technicalities of the research study after the researchers’ on-the-job training in Virginia, USA. The said training will take about four months from the month of March until June. By July 1, 2008, the researchers shall persist finishing the study on a designated time and venue. Since the study focuses on the experience of foreign and domestic on-the-job training, from the invested practice the researchers could impart the aspired knowledge and skills to broaden up the ideas and concerns regarding the topic. The researchers shall be able to contribute inputs and insights to differentiate the two parties and to define the assumed variables. The proposed project will take place in the residence of the three researchers according to our schedule and vacant time particularly in Pala-o and Tambo Gerona Iligan City; likewise, the researchers can also proceed to the nearest intenet café and study houses such as Scelto Internet Café and Bea’s Café and Study.

First and foremost, the researchers are going to gather information through interview survey. The group is going to formally approach the constituents of the on-the-job training program of St. Michael’s College specifically the Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management students including the graduates. It shall be a proper interview and shall be video graphed to acquire concrete evidence for possible interrogations. It is also intended that the researchers are going to come up with a series of questions regarding the respondent’s experience during his or her on-the-job training period.

After the stipulated procedure, the researchers shall undergo a consultation with the instructor and a selected professional mentor. The initial results shall serve as one of our basis to determine the comparison of domestic and foreign on-the-job training through a focus group discussion. From the private forum, the researchers are expecting some discrepancies about the initial results and shall confirm it to the paper adviser.

The researchers also need to research on the hospitality culture between the Philippines, USA and Singapore, since these are the places that the HRM students are sent for their OJT. With the shared experiences from the respondents, the researchers are going to connect the data gathered towards the presumed variables about the TRAINEE such as time management, work habits, work attitude and the professional relationships endowed by the TRAINEE.

(NOTE: Ma’am, regarding the prescribed attachments, from our survey tool, do we need to come up with a formula of statistical technique applicable in interpreting data results since our research approach is more on the observational aspect? Thank you, ma’am. ;-})

I. Project Title

SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECT OF LOW RATES OF PENSION HOUSES
IN ILIGAN CITY

II. Abstract

Pension Houses in Iligan City are small businesses that offer special prices for travelers staying more than a week. They are less expensive than a full service hotel since they are family run and have limited services beyond lodging and food. However, all products and services in similar establishments and classification ideally have similar cost. The rate of the Pension Houses in Iligan City is distinct to this marketing norm. The researchers are determined to compare the rates of the pension houses across the cities of Ozamis City, Tangub City, Pagadian City and of Iligan city. This research will use secondary data to compare the prevailing pension houses rates of the mentioned cities and at the same time conduct a survey that relatively measures the socio-economic variables in this study.

III. Project description

A. Purpose

The study generally aims to determine the socio-economic effect of low rates of Pension Houses in Iligan City. The view of this study examines the Revenue Generation, Job Opportunities, and Tourism as possible outcome of the problem being examined.

The researchers are also interested in describing the profile of the Pension Houses in the cities of Iligan, Ozamis City, Pagadian City and Tangub City in terms of Capital, Rates, Number of Employees, their facilities and services.

B. Significance

Earning is the end goal of almost every establishment. Beyond economic needs of the establishment is its responsibility to the public and the community. Thus, this study aims to present this paradigm.

This research can determine the probable reasons of why Pension Houses in Iligan city lower their room rates, are they assured of gaining up the profit they have spend, can they assure to give customer satisfaction to their customers even though they give lower rates to them and lastly to perceived the socio-economic effects brought by lowering of rates to the city.

For the Researchers: This will broaden their knowledge of the on lodging establishments and as HRM students this will also serve as their basis of knowing.
For the Students: This will give knowledge to the students as well as to let them be aware of the possible causes of the lowering rates of the pension houses on the places being mentioned.

C. History

These small businesses may offer special prices for travelers staying more than a week. In Switzerland this definition has a wider range beyond a cheap hostel. These family run guesthouses may be located in historic old buildings, have beautifully designed rooms with private bath and usually have a restaurant for breakfast and dinner. They are less expensive than a full service hotel since they are family run and have limited services beyond lodging and food.

The history of the low rates of Pension houses in Iligan City can be traced back to Famous Pension House. The owner Alma Sarsaba who first introduced the lowering the rates of Pension houses to generate more income. Said “Para pang masa, bahala barato basta punu”. This relatively means that quality service is an option rather a right for all customers.

This can affect the Student’s performance in school like having pre-marital sex because it’s affordable to pay the rate of pension house. This also can affect of having prostitution to the city because having sex with rental girls.

The pre-marital sex among teenagers will most likely to occur considering that these pension rooms are cheaper and affordable to students.

Definition of Terms:

1. Pension House- is small businesses that offer special prices for travelers staying more than a week.
2. Lodging- a room or rooms rented for residence in another's house.
3. Hostel- A supervised, inexpensive lodging place for travelers, especially young travelers.
4. Job Opportunities-it is the process of getting a person capable doing a job or work with is related to the skills.
5. Revenue Generation-to identify new business opportunities, enhance sales productivity & marketing effectiveness, improve distribution channel effectiveness, and execute key account strategies to increase share & loyalty.
6. Tourism-is a collection of activities, services and industries that delivers a travel experience, including transportation, accommodations, eating and drinking establishments, retail shops, entertainment businesses, activity facilities and other hospitality services provided for individuals or groups traveling away from home.
7. Socio-economic effect-the effects of a certain problem to the society and also the economy.

D. Plan of Work

This is a quantitative study. Survey Questionnaire would be the method to use to gather data regarding the study. In doing our survey research, we will be selecting from the customers from the establishment and also the owner or the lower positioned staffs of the establishment of the said places.

The main criterion of this study that will be selected with the use of the survey questionnaire is the owner or lower positioned staffs that are recently working in the pension houses of the said places, while the customers are selected as to their reaction and feedback to the said establishments.

E. Expected Results

During the start of our survey and on the data collection, the researchers will be updating the study. As for the result or the findings of the study, the researchers are expected to have possible results of the survey between the employees, the customers and the owner of the lodging establishment and their relationship with the said problem.

The researchers will be gathering information to qualify customers as to their status, income, standard of living, age and have some questions regarding their feedback to the lodging establishment. For the employees and owner, we will gather information as to their salary, the services they give to customers, the customers’ reaction to their services and some questions that will have possible answers to the research.
